It is worth noting that BYD is not the only automaker betting on solid-state batteries. Globally, companies including Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW, CATL and others are actively laying out solid-state battery technologies. Among them, Toyota started relevant research on solid-state batteries as early as 2008.
BYD began researching solid-state batteries in 2013 and validated the technical feasibility in 2016 with small prototypes of less than one ampere-hour in capacity. By 2023, the company had developed industrial manufacturing processes and materials. Since 2024, BYD has been producing test cells with capacities of 20 and 60 ampere-hours.

Solid-state batteries with a longer EV driving range, smaller size and safer performance are considered the main development direction for the next generation of power batteries, but there are several challenges restricting mass production, particularly significantly higher costs.
Earlier in September last year, Sun indicated that he would continue to strengthen the research and development (R&D) of the next generation of batteries, such as solid-state batteries and new materials, with “sulfide solid-state batteries being one of the directions.”
