These various considerations led to the current research: to review those feasibility studies of the microgrid projects funded under the Australian Government's Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund (RRCRF) between 2019 and 2024 and explore in detail some of these drivers, barriers, and opportunities.
Using the lens of strategic niche management and viewing each initiative as a protected space of innovation, this research analyses the feasibility studies of 20 microgrid projects across regional and remote Australia funded by the Federal Government's Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund (RRCRF).
Additionally, this research explores other key barriers and opportunities confronting the projects. The findings confirm that the development of microgrids in Australia remains nascent, with projects in differing locations grappling with similar opportunities and barriers.
Microgrids and standalone power systems in particular are attracting attention from regional and remote communities as a potential solution to their woes of energy insecurity and unreliability.
Related to this, there are generally economies of scale in power generation that microgrids can find difficult to capture, “ Mid-scale solar is too expensive and land is problematic, so we are focusing on rooftop PV and battery installations, small community batteries, and energy efficiency measures ” (Interviewee 5).
